What is the source of the money being lent (is it Riba based activities)?

The Shariah Board for HSBC has stated the following: 'When you buy something or obtain financing, however, the money behind it does not have to be from a Halal source. Your relationship with the seller must be in line with the Shariah - the seller's relationship with other parties is not your concern. Consider the example of buying soft drinks from a beverage company that also sells alcohol. Let's assume that the soft drinks are prepared according to the Shariah, it would be Halal to buy the soft drinks even if the company's business is not completely Shariah.'

Ahli United Bank have said ...'the Manzil Product has investors from Kuwait and Bahrain who have individually invested in this scheme. The Islamic Home Purchase Plan is not linked to the Bank's other commercial activities.'
